Are string quartets endangered?
Reaction to today's story about the Azmari Quartet, artists-in-residence at Northern Kentucky University, whose jobs have been eliminated, combine shock and dismay. Kurt Sassmannshaus, who heads strings at UC's College-Conservatory of Music said, "Any time chamber music and strings are cut, it's bad." What's your opinion? Are quartets on college campuses endangered?

It's Monday 2/27, I just found out this morning that I won't have a viola teacher for the Fall Semester at NKU. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to major in music education on an instrument I won't have instruction on. I have a great relationship with Meghan Casper of the Azmari Quartet. I don't think this will be easily duplicated. I'm also a part time adult student. I wonder now if I will even have a place in the new "Master Plan." I "WAS" making progress. Now...
Dear Viola player,
The situation must be very distressing for you, but don't give up yet. I think there may be something brewing behind the scenes...I'm going to be looking into the whole situation and writing an update for the Enquirer. It's interesting that Pat Corbett specifically wanted a string quartet to be in residence in order to start a viable strings program. Can it be successfully started without any resident faculty? And what exactly does the Corbett bequest stipulate? The answers should become clearer in the coming days or weeks. Keep playing those scales!! (The viola is my favorite string instrument.)
Hey, this is an older article I know, but I was wondering if anyone could help. I've played violin since 5th grade, then viola since 10th, and I don't want to lose what I have now. Even though I've never taken private lessons, I am looking for a quartet or small group to play with just to keep the instrument playing. Does anyone know of a good website or a place where I could find an intermediate group to play with just for fun or maybe for small gigs? Thanks!
