Anything to do with Cincinnati Ballet
Best: the way Kunzel can captivate an audience.
Worst: the way Jarvi can captivate an audience.
Best:Festival of Contemporary Chamber Music,April 26-April 30,2006 held at the Contemporary Art Museum.
It was classical concerts of a different kind, and brought in a lot of young people .
Every Boston Lyric Opera production.
Best Jazz: the Joe Lovano concert at the Blue Wisp in February to benefit his old friend Bob Bodley. Wall to wall people, with more listening outside, as this jazz great who mostly plays arenas these days, blew his heart out in a room with a capacity of only 125. Talk about showing the love...
Best Opera: L'Étoile. With sets like Magritte meets Dali in a hilariously well-done production!
Best Concert: Paavo/CSO/Mahler 2 in March--no question. As I blogged back then: "during the finale, I suddenly found myself taken by a major case of the chills and then, for good measure, just burst into tears! As soon as PJ made the final sweep of his arm to the orchestra and chorus and then swiveled around, turning, in his trademark dramatic look toward the unusually full hall, the house erupted in cries of "bravo". The audience, full of pent-up energy and emotion, let loose, applauding for what seemed like an eternity, and with an extra soupçon of foot-stamping for good measure!"
Hello, Janelle! Annalisa Pappano here...
I wanted to share with you a very special concert I attended in Milano this spring. I will never forget it. Roberto Gini (viola da gamba) played a two hour concert of extremely virtuosic viola bastarda music with the famous Baroque harpist, Mara Galassi, and Giovanni Togni on harpsichord. The concert was in the basement of an old church (lots of character) and was packed full of people, who were thrilled to hear "their" music. Roberto is a very musical player and made this esoteric Renaissance music a passionate artistic experience. The audience loved it, too!
On a more local note, I just went to see the Dayton Contemporary Dance company for the first time. It was one of the most inspiring and joyful shows I have attended here in the Midwest! I am certainly planning on returning to see them. We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful artistic choices here in Cincinnati. I am going to renew my resolution from last year and continue to explore these artistic opportunities in 2007.
Happy holidays!
