Classical Music
Janelle Gelfand on the classical music scene

Janelle's pen has taken her to Japan, China, Carnegie Hall, Europe (twice), East and West Coasts, and Florida. In fact, Janelle was the first Enquirer reporter to report from Europe via e-mail -- in 1995.

Janelle began writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer as a stringer in 1991 while writing a Ph.D. dissertation in musicology at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She joined the Enquirer staff in 1993.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she graduated from Stanford University, Janelle has lived in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. In her free time, this pianist plays chamber music with her circle of musical friends in Cincinnati.

She covers the Cincinnati Symphony, May Festival and Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, chamber music ensembles, and as many recitals and events at CCM and NKU as possible.

Boston Pops Brawl

Speaking of symphony etiquette (below), just when you thought it was safe to tap someone on the shoulder and say "Shh!" -- you get decked.

That's what happened at the opening concert of the Boston Pops with Keith Lockhart. In case you missed the video, here's the story with a link to the video. (It seems TV cameras were there for opening night.)

Amid all the ruckus, Keith, who had been leading a medley from "Gigi," just stopped and stared. Maybe he thought they were going to say, "This show has been crashed!"

Speaking of symphony eitquette. I would like to share one that bugs me, but not to the point of punching someone out.
Am I the only one who takes offense when there is a stampede to the doors by many of the patrons after the last note is struck and the the maestro, guest artist, and orchestra taking a bow? It strikes me as the height of rudeness to everyone who had just put a major effort out for an evening of entertainment. These same stampeders then develop major bad attitudes if the musicians play an encore.
Just wanted to know if this bothered anyone else.

Gee, I hope that's not me you're seeing. I am usually bounding up the steps to make my deadline...

The lack of civility in general (i.e. road courtesy) is reflected today in the concert hall. Those rushing out, in general, have no where to go except hurry home to turn the tv on, or else it's just our anxious society.
When I attend the May Festival and at the Kravis Center, where I live in West Palm Beach, I try to sit in the last row because often someone is banging on the back of the seat when they cross their legs or they're just bored.

Oh, I have to weigh in on this... It also is one of my pet peeves, and while I won't punch anyone in the nose, I often toy with sticking my leg out to trip the stampeders... I don't get it, not at all. These performers pour their hearts and souls and guts and blood, sweat and tears out for us, and people cannot sit in their seats for an extra 4 minutes or so to thank them, to show some appreciation??
God, it makes me crazy.

Folks who bolt at the curtain call ought to be banned from performances.
Small brains, small hearts...
