Paavo plays Beethoven at Mostly Mozart
Making a trip to New York this summer? You might want to check this out: Paavo Jarvi is bringing his Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie to Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival in the Rose Theater for an all-Beethoven concert on Aug. 2. His soloist is Ingrid Fliter, the Argentine pianist who won the 2006 Gilmore Artist award. She's coming to Cincinnati next season for a date with the CSO.

I have always looked down at the attire of paavo.
The orchestra is required to wear a tux most nights. Paavo does not wear a tux.
This really bothers me.
If a tux is required -- then all need to wear them. What makes Paavo someone that is special.
The reason for this post -- the picture of paavo with a tux shirt and tie!!
Hey, I have never seen him conduct with that attire.
so, I guess with his German orchestra he can wear tux .. but Cincinnati -- no way..
Apparently in cincinnati - he feels that he has special treatment.
I like everyone to be treated equal- the boss wears what the employees wear!
Get over it. What makes Paavo special? He's the friggin' music director, for one thing!
I personally think his attire on the Cincinnati podium sets him apart from the crowd, is no less austere than a tux, and brings a flavor of his eastern European heritage to the stage.
same person bitching over paavo's "lack of a tux" is pathetic yet again..... take a look at gergiev, echenbach and others...no tux there either. Does this anonymous author own a tux shop and are sales down or something. give it a rest man.
I always think of ill-fitting silk pajamas or kind of a dated look from the '80's. It makes me appreciate it when someone shows up well tailored.
Tux or no tux, it's just a matter of time before Paavo is gone to one of the Top Five U.S. orchestras.
I think that concert attire has definitely relaxed over the past decade for men as well as women. Paavo told me he bought his "tunic" suit one time on tour, I think in Paris, when his luggage was lost and he literally had to run down the street to buy something. He found that suit and liked it so much, he ordered several more. If you look in the archives here for April, you'll see a photo of him on tour with Leonidas Kavakos, dressed as twins. Gergiev wears the same thing. As for women, some female conductors wears skirt suits, some, like Marin Alsop, favor pantsuits. And this season at the CSO, the female soloists ranged from Carmen Marc Valvo gowns to Helene Grimaud's loose pants, casual top, flats and hair sticking up in a clip -- sort of Asian influence, maybe?

Paavo's here at least until 2011, and according to this article (http://www.nysun.com/article/44570?page_no=1), Cincinnati IS one of the top five orchestras in the U.S.
That NY Sun article is worthless. It is written by someone who is completely unknown in the music field, and also completely unknown in New York City. The NY Sun is also a completely unknown "newspaper." Those of you who know anything about anything know that the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is not at all in the "Top 5," though it is a great band.
I also hope that all of you reading this are not so blind as to think that Mr. Jarvi actually intends on staying here after 2011. This idea of an "evergreen" contract is a wonderful thing for Jarvi, but the fact that we're all cheering about it is silly. He can just pack his bags and go anytime he wants after 2011. There's absolutely no chance that he'll renew his contract for another several years because of this "evergreen" clause, so the CSO is totally at his mercy.
Why doesn't anyone in this town have any common sense?
I have to say I agree with you on that "top 5" rating. The author (somebody Kirshnit?) is not a well-known critic ... But the good news is that from what I'm hearing lately, the Cincinnati Symphony under Paavo sounds better than the Cleveland Orchestra right now under Franz Welser-Most (which makes me wonder why the Clevelanders are invited to play Carnegie Hall and the CSO is not...) Recently, I've heard the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia under Conlon and in live concerts on XM radio, and it's still a top orchestra, but it does not have a music director...so who knows how long that will last. And yes, Paavo can be lured away any time post 2011. I'd place the CSO definitely in the top ten right now.
