Paavo on YouTube
Have you seen the Cincinnati Symphony videos that are posted on YouTube? (There are links on the CSO Web site.) They also appear in Music Hall as "First Notes" before the concerts where Paavo is conducting.
What do you think of the arty filming of these? I like that PJ's very informal, but not sure I love the black-and-white when the camera pulls back.
Be sure to go Paavo's Stravinsky Festival, opening tonight in Music Hall.
The orchestra is saluting the composer's 125th birthday this month over two weekends. Today through Sunday, the program includes Stravinsky’s majestic "Symphony of Psalms" with the May Festival Chorus, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3. Learn more about the music in Classical Conversations, one hour before the concert, with Järvi and assistant conductor Eric Dudley.
Concerts are 8 p.m. today and Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday in Music Hall. Tickets: $12-$75.25, $10 students; seniors half price; or a $75 Festival Pass for both weeks, including a "Bohemian Bash" with the Faux Frenchmen on Nov. 10. BYW, kids are $5 on Sunday. 513-381-3300, www.cincinnatisymphony.org.

In general, I like the "First Notes" videos, a handful of which I have seen on YouTube, all of which I've seen just before concerts. I like the informal, documentary-style sound bytes; I like Paavo's rolled-up sleeves; and I like the way he at least *seems* to be talking about the music in a natural way instead of declaiming something prepared in advance. I do, however, take issue with the black-and-white cut-aways; these, in my opinion, over-do the informal style that the producers are aiming at. They already achieve that effect nicely with Paavo's dress, the cutscenes of the rehearsals, and the mixed use of steady-cam and the handheld camera.
This is really no big deal, though; what I'm really interested in is the performance itself.

Not a bad idea, not if he'd just say something with depth or insight. I feel like I'm listening to a Clintonesque reply to a reporter's question.
I'm disappointed that the ones shown before the performances are shortened versions. The YouTube versions have more information. I had watched last night's video online before the show, and had mentioned to some fellow singers some of the things that Paavo said that I thought would interest them -- and those bits weren't included.
