Ticket deal boosts symphony crowds
A January ticket sale helped boost attendance at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra says. The one-week sale offered subscriptions to all remaining season concerts at $30 per seat, with a minimum purchase of three.
The "Big Ticket Sale" resulted in 282 new subscriptions, a 48 percent increase over last year's January campaign. An additional 283 single tickets were sold to those who already had season tickets in a special offer for subscribers.
The symphony's new marketing director Sherri Prentiss added some new angles to help this year's sale, such as a sponsorship with PNC, which allowed for extra advertisting and cross promotion.

While a 5% increase is welcome news, it unfortunately works out to 14 short run subscribers. It is a step in the right direction. I think it is indicative of how difficult the one at a time sales will be to rejuvenate the demographics of the typical symphony ticket buyer. It's going to be a lot of hard work.
This leads to a question. Just what were the makeup of these 14 subcribers-current subsribers who wanted more tickets for future concerts, younger people who discovered the value offered here, young couples looking for a couple nights out before the end of the season or.......? It would be good information to know whouldn't it? The saving and regenerating of the CSO customer base will be found on what to do for the future not necessarly worked in the past.
