Kunzel and the Pops to make history -- again
OK, so it was the worst-kept secret in history, too. But it's finally been confirmed that the Cincinnati Pops, led by Erich Kunzel, is the only American orchestra invited to play during the Olympic festivities in Beijing.
Congratulations are pouring in as we speak, from the Governor, the Mayor and also Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.), who appeared with Kunzel in the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington last year...

Hopefully the "Nuclear Explosion" discussed so close to this article will not be prophetic.
I have some serious reservations about the wisdom of the orchestra getting involved in such a controversial event as a guest of a country so cavalier about human rights.

Is this more about the high point of Maestro Kunzel's career, and is it really worth all the effort, risk, and expense?
Lindner is again duped into bankrolling Kunzel's self-serving agenda of kitsch, while ignoring excellence right under his nose, the Symphony.
Thanks to 5:38 and 9:44, this is truly a difficult venture to again get to China with all the disturbances going on now.
And it is a one-man SHOW, yet our beloved Cincinnati will be well displayed.
Let us hope it will go well and the same financial support will then be directed to our CSO in the near future.
"Self-serving agenda of kitsch"??
Why so insulting? There are many, many of us who loves the Pops, their music and their shows.
If you don't, then fine. But why oh why do you have to degrade those of us who love it?
Very true to the above poster. However, what a waste of money. Unbelievable!
"Self-serving agenda of kitsch"?? = Kunzel leading the Cincinnati Pops.
How many more "broadway night" shows do we need featuring "B-" level talent. Or "movie magic" with circus acts dancing about the front of the stage. Doesn't anyone hear Kunzel's inane, insensitive and inappropriate remarks from the podium? My wife and I had our fill of "the kitsch" two years ago and canceled my subscription. What a shame to make the Pops an exported commodity of Cincinnati for the Olympic ceremonies instead of the Symphony.
The CSO was exported to Europe just a month ago, to great acclaim I might add. Would you suggest the CSO go to Beijing and play the Shosty 10th?
Hear, hear!
I've performed in many of those Broadway concerts over the last 27 years, and I could sing those pieces in my sleep. Heck, I could sleep while singing them. I'm surprised the audience doesn't sleep, too.
The orchestra is a fabulous ensemble and their versatility is amazing. When they get a chance to let loose and swing, I'm often awestruck.
But the repetitive programming and the inane remarks and the Lawrence-Welky acts make for dull evenings. I keep doing it because every once in a while Erich's real abilities shine through and there's a moment or two of real music.
I suppose the B level talent of guest artists is inevitable, as I'm sure there isn't much money available to pay anyone better. However, I'd rather just hear the orchestra do its thing all by itself than have to watch John Schneider flub the lyrics one more time.

Wow, you don't have to rip the Pops. Many of us like their shows. Just don't attend.
Not sure why the vitriole.
For the record, I have no desire to go hear the Pops but attend Symphony concerts regularly.
However...
It seems silly to suggest that I'm somehow superior to those who like the Pops. The above posters may do well to keep their enlightened brand of discussion to themselves.

It's a blog. This is what we do. We comment.
We discuss.
We don't judge the "enlightenment" of the other posters.
I'm trying to figure out why all of these comments are not showing... If you click on Post a comment, you can read them all -- Janelle
