Classical Music
Janelle Gelfand on the classical music scene

Janelle's pen has taken her to Japan, China, Carnegie Hall, Europe (twice), East and West Coasts, and Florida. In fact, Janelle was the first Enquirer reporter to report from Europe via e-mail -- in 1995.

Janelle began writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer as a stringer in 1991 while writing a Ph.D. dissertation in musicology at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She joined the Enquirer staff in 1993.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she graduated from Stanford University, Janelle has lived in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. In her free time, this pianist plays chamber music with her circle of musical friends in Cincinnati.

She covers the Cincinnati Symphony, May Festival and Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, chamber music ensembles, and as many recitals and events at CCM and NKU as possible.

janelle,

i attended all of the top 5 concerts except for the jaime laredo one (which i still regret) and while they were wonderful, my season favorite had to be Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2 ("Resurrection"), march 10 and 11. i had never heard this particular piece played before and so i went both nights and was absolutely overwhelmed with emotion. during the finale, I suddenly found myself taken by a major case of the chills and then, for good measure, i just burst into tears! the soloists, the may festival chorus, the orchestra and paavo combined as one to create one of those unforgettable nights when, years later, you can say "I was there when..."

*this* was a performance worthy of being presented at the London Proms... we are so blessed.

Janelle,

I thought you were originally asking people to post their personal choices for favorite concert of the season--NOT their favorite of the top 5. As many friends have mentioned to me, the high attendance at the end of the season was top-heavy, possibly, in part, due to people with subscriber choice tickets which needed to be used. Just because a concert had high attendance does not necessarily mean that it was the favorite one for listeners throughout the season.

As much as I enjoyed the all-Rach program, I find it curious that it has so out-distanced the other four in the top 5 to date:

#1 opening weekend/Paaavo/Beethoven's 9th: 9

#2 4/21-23, Paavo/Weill/Bernstein/Gershwin: 4

#3 4/27-29, All Rach/Anna Polusmaik: 89!!!!!!

#4 4/7-8, All Mozart/Jaime Laredo: 2

#5 5/5-6, Paavo/Season Finale/Beethoven Violin Concerto: 8
===============================
I would LOVE to hear what other programs were people's favorites this year--regardless of the attendance they received!
