Classical Music
Janelle Gelfand on the classical music scene

Janelle's pen has taken her to Japan, China, Carnegie Hall, Europe (twice), East and West Coasts, and Florida. In fact, Janelle was the first Enquirer reporter to report from Europe via e-mail -- in 1995.

Janelle began writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer as a stringer in 1991 while writing a Ph.D. dissertation in musicology at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She joined the Enquirer staff in 1993.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she graduated from Stanford University, Janelle has lived in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. In her free time, this pianist plays chamber music with her circle of musical friends in Cincinnati.

She covers the Cincinnati Symphony, May Festival and Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, chamber music ensembles, and as many recitals and events at CCM and NKU as possible.

Music 'til Dawn

Remember Vern in Lakewood who was going nuts because he couldn't remember the theme song to the radio show "Music 'til Dawn"? This week, Bill Cherry, former host of American Airlines "Music 'til Dawn" on New Orleans WWL-AM in the late '50s wrote some interesting comments. Click here for what appears to be the most complete "Music 'til Dawn" history, including the theme song, "That's All." And be sure to keep reading to see what he wore while he did those broadcasts from a furniture store window on Royal Street. Thanks Bill!

I listened to show on New York's WCBS in 1957 and the host was the great Bob Hall I had just started to teach and found that Bob 's soothing voice and the selections calmed me after some stressful hours I was indebted to him and the program for getting me through some difficult days. I would like to know what happened to Bob after he left the show and when did he die?
Thanks
Anon

I listened to Jay Andres off and on for 20-25 years over various Chicago radio stations. I actually began listening to him in 1953 in Cleveland then beginning in 1959 in the CHI area. The opening music to his Music 'til Dawn was indeed very stiring with the use of a base trombone.....I think. Boy what I wouldn't give to hear that redition one more time. rabrown34@hotmail.com I used to listen to Chuck Shaden too on Saturday afternoons in Chicago during the 1970s. Give me a "toot" if you can direct me to "That's All" in the version that Jay used and if you are listening out there Jay.......we sure do miss you.....you were one of the greats on radio in the CHI area.
