Music in Schools
I got a phone call today saying that Schiel Primary School for Arts Enrichment has lost a two-year, $45,000 grant (per year) that paid for choir and keyboard lessons for kids in the K-3 school. Apparently, the school does not know where to look for funding for the program, and the kids are asking, "When do we start?"
These are kids whose families have no musical instruments at home, and teachers designed class programs with that in mind. With all of the arts and outreach money out there, I'm hoping that one of you will have a suggestion for them.

Did they say why they lost the funding? If it is because the money is not available, that is one thing. But, if it is because of negligence on their part, that is another.
It was a government grant ($45,000 each year) that ended. Apparently, the principal thought he "had a lead" on another grant, but it "fell through." I suppose you could say the school wasn't agressive enough in pursuing funding for this program.
Everyone always says that there is "so much granting money available out there" for the arts. I don't know that there really is, although the funding that exists looks quite favorable upon educating children, but it takes work to obtain, maintain, and follow-up with funders. I recommend that they talk with someone at the Fine Arts Fund. Maybe the FAF could recommend a volunteer from the business community or a student in arts admin to help guide them to funding sources.
That's an excellent suggestion. Maybe the whole CPS district could use a P&G consultant to help them resurrect their music and arts...
