Here's the buzz
Did you see Team Nick last night on "Clash of the Choirs" and their performance of "Flight of the Bumblebee"? I was not only impressed, I was blown away. This was a top-notch performance by any standard -- musicianship, precision, ensemble, arrangement and not least, their genuine joy while singing it. And here's what else impressed me -- Nick Lachey chose a piece by a CLASSICAL composer. Ten points if you can name who it was.
Now, if they win and they go sing a live performance at CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL over the holidays, he'll be Saint Nick in my book.
What did you think?

After initially scorning the concept, I have to admit I have watched almost every minute of this show. Nick has been such a booster of Cincinnati and he has represented SCPA and all the Cincy area so well. Last night's Bumblebee had me enthralled and goosebumped. Go Team Lachey
Janelle: It's the "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Rimsky-Korsikoff
My spelling is good; my typing is awful: it should have been spelled: Korsakoff
yes, originally written by Rimsky for an interlude in an opera for orchestra.
A few years later it was rearranged for piano by Rachmaninoff.
I think what was sung was adapted from Rach. not the original.
Good, solid choral singing by a group composed of good soloists (a rare combination). The performances were a tour de force by great ensemble from a town with such a great choral tradition -- and it was no surprise. I was proud.

Nick has proven that he has the talent to put together and direct a great choir besides being a great singer and a major hottie!
Hi May Festival Chorus member, that's exactly what I was thinking. This is really a city of great singers. I thought their "What a Wonderful World" was excellent. Here was a choir that really sounded like a choir.
About Rimsky-Korsakov (the modern spelling), I think his Flight of the Bumblebee has been orchestrated for just about everything, including kazoo. Team Lachey's arrangement sounded like the Swingle Singers. (And if it was, there's another Cincy connection, because Ward Swingle was a CCM grad...)
