Classical Music
Janelle Gelfand on the classical music scene

Janelle's pen has taken her to Japan, China, Carnegie Hall, Europe (twice), East and West Coasts, and Florida. In fact, Janelle was the first Enquirer reporter to report from Europe via e-mail -- in 1995.

Janelle began writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer as a stringer in 1991 while writing a Ph.D. dissertation in musicology at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She joined the Enquirer staff in 1993.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she graduated from Stanford University, Janelle has lived in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. In her free time, this pianist plays chamber music with her circle of musical friends in Cincinnati.

She covers the Cincinnati Symphony, May Festival and Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, chamber music ensembles, and as many recitals and events at CCM and NKU as possible.

Budget ax at CCM

Here's the news about latest cuts at the University of Cincinnati -- this time summer programs at the prestigious College-Conservatory of Music. Will you be affected by these cuts? Did you ever visit the Opera Theatre and Music Festival in Lucca, Italy?

Are you a rising composer or musician who will miss the festival of new music that brought in guest composers such as Michael Nyman ("The Piano") and Fred Rzewski, or the Classical Guitar or Flute workshops? Weigh in and tell us what you think.

Apparently the Lucca festival only cost about $400,000. I'm wondering if there's an opera angel out there who would like to see it continue...

As a theorist and composer who has contributed program notes and whatnot to MusicX (the contemporary music festival), and now as a visiting faculty member at CCM, I am saddened by these cuts. The summer programs gave CCM even more good publicity - and gave CCM students and faculty great opportunities.

Cutting budgets all over UC. It's a tragedy, and all while Nancy Zimpher drives out good people from the university and still gets a monster bonus and a ridiculous raise in salary...

Can someone at UC please open their eyes?!

During my first summer in Cincinnati (this year), I greatly enjoyed the Grandin Festival and was so happy that I could enjoy this gem every summer for the next several years that I plan to be here. Sadly, now, I can only enjoy it one more time.

This is horrible news. These festivals connected CCM to the community and the world. Potential students get their first taste of CCM at these summer festivals and the reputation of some of them took even the name "Cincinnati" to far reaches of the world.

It is a shame that "budget balancing" means a napalm torching of programs.

Suppose one has bad chronic indigestion and needs gasto-intestinal "balance." Suppose there are two ways to achieve this balance and get relief: one is to work with diet and exercise and over time make the system healthy. The other, an instantaneous fix, is to cut one's arms off. How many of would choose the latter? Apparently Warren George would.

One point...the reason there IS an Opera Theater of Lucca is because of Lorenzo Malfatti. How do you think CCM ended up in Lucca in the first place? I know it's passe' to give credit where it's due, but that's a fact. Another....think the mediocre football program would be able to come up with 400K if they needed it? Makes me sick. Thanks Lorenzo, I love you. You're the man in my book. Thank God for you!
