Classical Music
Janelle Gelfand on the classical music scene

Janelle's pen has taken her to Japan, China, Carnegie Hall, Europe (twice), East and West Coasts, and Florida. In fact, Janelle was the first Enquirer reporter to report from Europe via e-mail -- in 1995.

Janelle began writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer as a stringer in 1991 while writing a Ph.D. dissertation in musicology at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She joined the Enquirer staff in 1993.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she graduated from Stanford University, Janelle has lived in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. In her free time, this pianist plays chamber music with her circle of musical friends in Cincinnati.

She covers the Cincinnati Symphony, May Festival and Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, chamber music ensembles, and as many recitals and events at CCM and NKU as possible.

Cincinnati Pops Nutcracker at #3 on Billboard

The Pops' Nutcracker album is inching up the Billboard Chart, this week at No. 3. Here's a link to my review.

Ahead of the Pops, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's latest holiday recording, "Spirit of the Season" at No. 1, and crossover violinist André Rieu's "Radio City Music Hall: Live in New York," at No. 2.

Just a real shame that the orchestra that recorded this CD can't be heard playing the same music at Music Hall anymore...
It'll only be heard in the "more intimate" Aronoff so we can go ice skating and shopping after the performances.
Sad, indeed.

Oh no. Here we go again, getting all angry and wining over the Nutcracker.

The orchestra that made the recording is not the one that plays with the Ballet for the Nutcracker. The scores not the same either. It's a very much reduced arrangement.

Interesting.... I had a customer today ask me if I was going to Nutcracker. I paused for a moment to consider my response. He said that they've been going for years, each Christmas. Not this year. He was upset about it being yanked from Music Hall. True story. No influence from me whatsoever.

I think you really blew it, Ms. Morgan.

After 26 years of attending the Nutcracker at Music Hall the powers of being have taken over our beloved event. The Aronoff Center? Cold. A real faux pas for the Cincinnati Ballet Company.

This decision is going to come back and bite those who made it.

Going this year? Not on a bet!

The way tickets are selling I will wait until it is announced that the Nutcracker will return to Music Hall in '08.

Wanna bet?

These are not just empty musings. I too have come across family after family that aren't going this year, and they've been regular annual patrons. As has been stated here over and over, Music Hall was a big part of the draw. The Nutcracker ballet itself can be watched on TV. But the Christmas grandeur of MH just makes it special.
